Greentree Adolescent Program
Greentree Adolescent Program (GAP) is a high intensity learning facility which provides a residential community for male adolescents (ages 13 – 20 years) who do not live with their families due to: long standing family problems, histories of abuse and/or neglect, and significant behavioral and adjustment difficulties.
Funded by the Maryland State Departments of Human Resources and Juvenile Services, and the District of Columbia’s Child and Family Services Agency, these young men benefit from living in a structured residential community within a diverse, urban neighborhood which hosts one of America’s best performing public schools, Walt Whitman High School.
We believe each GAP resident deserves the right to build a collaborative support system as he increases his social and emotional stability, develops life-skills, and enhances his capacity for interdependence while preparing to return to his own family and community or to an alternative network of community support (e.g., foster home, independent living program, college, or military service).
At GAP, youth are given the opportunity to:
- Experience a non-violent, safe and supportive lifestyle with others
- Develop trusting and effective relationships with licensed independent social work therapists, in both individual and small group contexts
- Reconnect to family systems
- Give back to community through service activities
- Prepare for higher education and vocational preparation, including career development
- Improve physical and emotional health through recreational, athletic, spiritual, and creative arts activities
- Acquire new proactive, and adaptive social skills which facilitate the youth’s development
